The problem as was told to me was that the R-1/9 stuck in behind had an asshole to belly button SRO crowd w/o any working overhead fans. Many passengers were overcome by the heat & a few fainted outright needing an EMT escort to fresh air. That in and of itself hastened the decision to boot the R-1/9s off the Broadway Line.Seems the TA suits found an excuse. The prewar equiptment didn't sit well with the Broadway BMT crowd. They thought they saw the last of them when the Triplexs' were retired in 1965 & the coming of the R32s. |
