The problem is that it’s not the Railroad’s place to engage in social engineering. If it has to eliminate good jobs to cut costs, then it should. The MTA’s charter (as it applies to the commuter railroads) is:. . .the continuance, further development and improvement of commuter transportation and other services related thereto within the metropolitan commuter transportation district, including but not limited to such transportation by railroad, omnibus, marine and air, in accordance with the provisions of this title [and] to develop and implement a unified mass transportation policy for such district. Pub. Auth. Law § 1264(1). Given that, if the improvement of commuter transportation and other services involves the elimination of “good jobs,” then so be it. |
