At some point some enterprising person from Car Equipment who had nothing better to do noticed that the windows didn’t quite match the profiles of the side windows on the cars and so the bottom few inches on the end windows were painted black in an attempt to make the “window line” uniform.

Eventually, during various repaintings then black area was eliminated and the fronts just painted silver above the blue band. ">
