If you're using a chip-and-pin machine you need to use a debit card... almost no US credit cards have the type of PIN needed for those machines. Ironically, the reason for this is the confusion you alluded to: we are used to PIN = cash/debit transaction, no PIN = credit. In Canada PIN can be used for all transactions, the machine allows you to select credit or debit if it is not a credit-only card.That said I generally just use cash to add money to my Opus card... in Sydney it was worse. The machines to add to cards required pin and accepted no cash. I ended up having to go to the local 7-11 just to use cash (until I learned I could use my debit card). |
