"When the Eastern Division was allotted J thru M, they probably tried to align J for Jamaica, M for Myrtle, then K and L went to whichever was left."You may have a point that the above was the thinking of the TA when they created the route letters. Some times here are just "two happenings happening at the same time". Simply an example - in the early 1930's when it was just the A, AA, C and CC trains on the Eighth Avenue line, and the C and CC trains plied the Concourse line in the Bronx. Many folks could have easily suspected that the Municipal Subway folks named the C and CC routes for "Concourse". -- This is an entirely different scheme than our current bus systems - where the Bx44 represents the Bronx bus number 44 and S-44 represents the Staten Island bus number 44. In that case there is a direct tie between the Borough name and the route name of the line. We did not have that in the subways. There may have been a few connections between neighborhood terminals or areas like your association of the J and M trains to Jamaica and Myrtle Avenue, but never a full-fledged scheme involving other subway lines as a whole. I think the statement connecting the route QB to mean "Queens-Brooklyn" or "Queens - Brighton" to be false inference. Besides the RR, TT, and QT - there has been a whole mess of train service names and routes to/from Astoria for such a simple equation. Mike |
