From a previous message:

"It is not possible to relay at 36th and maintain normal service."

Of course it is POSSIBLE to terminate a train at the 36th Street-Fourth Avenue station. The train operators and conductors simply announce that 36th Street is the last station, the passengers leave the train, the train is then routed via the West End line to the switch area near 9th Avenue where it reverses and returns to the ststion, or down the center track to Coney Island train yards. Or the trains simply layup on the express tracks out of service - because the express tracks themselves are out of service. This kind of operation has been done for years or decades on the various lines.

While the phrase, the "blank train" terminates AT a certain station usually means that there track switches and possibly layup tracks for that operation - that is not always the case. The G-train "terminated" for decades "at" the Smith-9th Street station, but every body damn well knows that those G-trains rode all of the way to the Fourth Avenue station and actually relayed on the express tracks there.
