When I was growing up, there was a "gentlemen's agreement" as I remember that delayed the start of the school year in New York to the day after the normal conclusion of the US Open Tennis Championships. While that was not always honored, as I remember it was why the school year usually started the Monday after Labor Day, even in years where Rosh Hashanah fell after the school year started AND did not fall on a weekend. The idea was so that kids could attend the US Open, especially during the second week which has always been the week after Labor Day.I've known people who don't care about Tennis the rest of the year (even for Wimbledon) but will watch whatever they could of the US Open. |
