Many large (utility scale) wind turbines use transmissions to maintain constant rpm at the generator to eliminate the need for a rectifier/inverter set. As to speed, they are generally set to shut down @ 55mph, but there are some you tube videos of brake failures that are pretty cool. Always grabs the students attention when we show them. |
