Printed photos and film can degrade just the same. Digital has the advantage of effectively infinite non-destructive copying. The data can simply move from one computer to the next so long as there are computers. There is little reason why "format" would be a problem.I don't consider any of those scenarios to be likely. Even in BSG, the colonial fleet still had modern technology (not necessarily on the Galactica). In theory, a few computers could contain a significant amount of human knowledge, much more than can be held using old forms of media, which actually makes computers more useful for preserving human knowledge in the event of a Cylon holocaust. |
