One will remain as is to become an 8000-series car, use unknown. Most of the NJT Comet-3 fleet was flood-damaged in both Bay Head and Meadowlands. The rebuilding process would be severe enough to not grandfather the cab cars' structural status to be FRA compliant, which is why the COmet-2 cab cars were all stripped to coaches. NJT EMD's won't fit thru Jamaica canopies (dynamic brake blisters on the hood units). I wrote a comment to the MTA public hearings on LIRR capital plans saying in so many words that the diesel fleet situation is bad and unsustainable, they need to come out of denial, and should buy 20 Bombardier MLV cars doing whatever customizations necessary, after the MARC delivery completes. |
