Actually, BRT president, Fredrick Uhlmann, proposed a rail bridge just NORTH of the present WillyB, in 1892. NY state even gave him a charter to build it, along with a vehicular bridge, where the present bridge is. But political interests and Jay Gould's Manhattan Elevated Railway frustrated all of his attempts. Uhlmann gave up and in early 1896 returned the charter to the state. Shortly after that, construction for the present bridge began.
