Can you imagine if one of those shoreliners came at a cantenary support pole sideways at 70+MPH ? The car might have been sliced in half with the resultant monumental carnage. Its also lucky that the equipement went on the ground sideways with no obstructions. Imagine a building, parking lot, or station platform interacting with out of control equiptment at high speed? You can "what if" a situation like this to death. With all due condolences to the deciesed, this could have been a lot worse. Now Metro North now has a big problem on its hands, getting back public confidence. Also, if human error is determined to be the main cause of the derailment, send in the lawyers. MN will take a big hit in neglence/wrongful death lawsuits. MN-aka taxpayers that is. |
