There is also "Van Westihagens" (Sp?), a couple blocks from Zum Staamtisch in Glendale. Glendale, is probably one of the last vestiges of the German heritage of the area.The Wintergarden in Ridgewood (near the abandoned mezzanine of the Forest AVe station) also closed within the last year or two. It was one of the last old-German bars in Ridgewood. Most of the old German bars in Ridgewood became Romanian and Yugoslavian (Albanian, Serbian, Croation, etc) private social clubs in the 80's. Interestingly, a few of them have been transformed back into tradtional bars once again (under different names of course) what with all the Polish immigrants that have begun to take over Ridgewood over the last few years (The old Wintergarden being one of them). Ridgewood is predominantly Polish and Hispanic now, with a splash of other Eastern Europians like Romania, and the countries of the former Yugoslavia. |
