Back then the signs were almost always wrong. When you got on, you just "hoped" it was the right train (Don't forget, even many of the PA's didn't work, so it's not like the conductor could always say "This is an F train, when the signs said it was an E".
The old days really hardened people off, as today, most of the time, within reason, the signs are accurate.
