The original order of 6000s came in with the twin headlights and the roll sign on the top although the very last group (I'm not sure of which ones) had the single headlight on the top and the roll sign at the top of the off side window which is the way the second group of cars built with selected PCC streetcar parts were. There are subtle differences between the original 6000s with single headlights and later cars. The older cars had the headlights internally mounted while the Green hornets had them externally mounted. Eventually most of the 6000 series cars had the roll sign panel blanked over and Green Hornet style headlights installed at the top and the roll sign moved to the off side window to give the cars a more consistent look. Also the first group of 6000s had straight side doors which didn't match the curvature of the car body while the Green Hornet cars' doors curved to match the contour of the cars. There also seems to be controversy over how much Green Hornet streetcar went into the production of the rapid transit cars. Although the Chicago experts on this forum may be able to provide greater details, the way I understand it it was only window fixtures, stanchions and possibly seats from the Green Hornet streetcars that made their way into the new cars. The new cars were not Green hornet streetcars that had their ends removed and replaced by rapid transit car fronts as some in certain circle seem to think. |
