The only reason that the R-36 M/L cars had drop sash windows was because the R-33 singles were built with R-36 parts in order to get them to the Flushing line in time for the World's Fair. Once the entire Flushing line was fully equipped with WF, 40 R-36s were built with the left over R-33 parts for assignment to the mainline. AFAIK, once the TA opted for picture windows, they became standard on all future NYCTA designs.
