As envisioned in the 1970s, the SAS in the Bronx was supposed to be connected to the Dyre Av Line near the original NYW&B terminal in Mott Haven. Unfortunately, although the city and later the MTA owned that entire ROW, portions of it S/O E180 have been demolished and would have to be rebuilt should by some miracle the SAS should ever find its way across the Harlem River. Additionally all,of the original SAS plans called for a takeover of the IRT Pelham Line by the SAS since it like the Jerome and Wh Pl Rd lines were built to dual contract standards and can accommodate IND/BMT sized cars by simply shaving back the station platforms as was done with the Astoria Line. Although it was not widely publicized, sometime in the 1970s, a modification was made that left the Pelham Line with the IRT and instead involved the takeover of the Wh Pl Rd Line as a branch of the SAS.. Needless to say that none of the Bronx plans for the SAS will ever come to fruition at least not in the lifetimes of most of us. Depending on the demographics, I tend to agree that the SAS as a panacea for relieving Lex Av overcrowding is highly overrated since the bulk of IRT east side passengers come from the Bronx so a SAS that doesn't address that issue will, probably be of less use than anticipated.
