As much as some folks want to talk about using the inner loop at South Ferry for #1 trains, they have completely forgotten that the #5 train uses the inner loop fairly often fairly regularly for the past couple of decades to return uptown from/to the Bowling Green station. As detailed drawings of the South Ferry tunnels for the new but now flooded terminal show the inner loop track wall openings do not line up with the outer loop platforms or the switches - meaning that it's going to take some major work to switch trains between the tracks. Needless to say, but I will - there's no station opening for the public, but only a MTA staff exit to the street near Battery Park. At least the outer loop had a station opening/exit inside the new ferry terminal, and at one time - token booth, turn-styles, etc. The inner loop platforms have for a long time been turned over to MTA staff usage, with the wall openings bricked over decades ago. Any of this kind of stuff means spending money, whereas right now the MTA is doing the cheapest thing possible, with the last stop for the #1 at Rector Street. Mike |
