When the el went my family still kept shopping in Jamaica, until around 1982ish when we just started going either to Queens Mall or Green Acres. By then Jamaica was a wasteland. The ONLY time we went out there was to get my yearly eye exam and to buy glasses at Cohen's on 164th St.I don't want to hear any racial excuses for the area going under. The area went black in the 60's and was still vibrant until the 1977 blackout looting. White people were still shopping there in large numbers. |
