O'Malley himself was persuadable to stay, he just wanted a ballpark in Brooklyn that was both auto friendly and accessible by subway. His family wanted out, particularly his kids. They saw the well-underway urban decay and saw California as the Promised Land. They pushed him over the edge, and any attempt by the city to meet his demands of a new ballpark in Brooklyn would have probably not worked. LA's desperation at getting a major league baseball team also helped, they basically gave him Chavez Ravine for nothing. |
