The red line under the number is a dead giveaway. When the Steinways were transferred from the Queens IRT lines to the IRT mainline, a red line was inserted under the car number to distinguish them from standard Lo Vs with which they were incompatible due to the different gearing on the Steinways. The 2 cars in these photos are from a small group of flivver trailers that were converted to Steinway motors along with another group of standard Lo-V trailers in 1929. |
