I actually haven't ridden up there since Harrison had the second main ripped out. BTW the reason the two diverge on the west slope is to have better grades in the direction of travel. In pre merger days, SP and WP operated between Weso and Elko using the two routes as a double track main.The Sparks shot brings back pleasant memories. In early Amtrak years, the San Francisco Zephyr stopped not only to change crews but wtake on water and fuel. There evening trick telegrapher back then was a very cool guy who spent his slow time teaching himself new languages--he was working on Arabic the last time I stopped in. |
