One of the websites dealing with Automat history claims that the one on Fulton St closed around 1970 but I remember it at least until 1972 when I started working in the command center and would eat there when I was working an AM or PM. The Automat was not open all night but right next door to it was a Bickford's diner which was open all nigh and where I ate when working midnights. After the Automat closed, it became a Burger King although I'm not sure of the exact year that change took place but the semi attached H & H retail shop on Pearl St remained open for several years and in the late 1970s when I was working the schedule office, I would often shop there and bring my lunch back to the office to eat. I'm not sure exactly when the BK and the H & H retail store closed since from 1983 to 85 I was out on the road as a trainmaster but When I came back to the schedule office in 1985, I don't recall either of them being there. I didn't exactly pay attention to when it happened but sometime in the late 1970s, the Bickford's next door closed and was taken over as a Wendy's.
