That said, I generally am not interested in long commutes to a job site.

It depends on what constitutes tolerable. Traffic free long commute with numerous alternative routes for spirited roadgeeking*, yes that's tolerable. Sitting in two hours of single digit speed traffic, awful. Sitting on a Comet bench seat for four hours, no, that just sounds awful. Sitting in Regional with a seat that reclines for a four commute, that's definitely doable at the right price and income.

*One could argue that the locations we're talking about had this option nearly one to two decades ago due to smaller population counts...
