Type 1 roadbed is conventional railroad type with full length crossties in ballasted roadbed. Type 2 consists of shoer ties imbedded in concrete with a trough between the running rails. Type 2 was first used only in stations of dual contract lines and the short ties were bolted down to the concrete for added strength. Later subway construction including the Montague St tunnel and the portion of the 14 St Line between Montrose and the portal N/O Bway Jct as well as the entire IND are entirely of type 2 however without the bolts through the ties since at some point it was decided that the bolts were not needed and the concrete was sufficient enough to secure the ties. More recent installations of type 2 are "modified" type 2 which has every 5th tie, the 3rd rail tie completely across from running rail to running rail. This type of modified type 2 was also used on portions of the IND on sharper curves to stabilize the ties at those locations. Initially, type 1 was used on special work (switches) but on many recent switch replacements, a sort of type 2 concrete roadbed with all ties across has been installed. Certain parts of the system like the 6 Av express tracks had type 8 which is all concrete with a trough between the running rails and rails on rubber pads installed as new construction. The 4 Av BMT express tracks in Bkln had type 8 installed but for some reason type 8 hasn't proven to be successful on the NYCTS and AFAIK all installations of it have been removed and replaced by modified type 2. There is a new type of roadbed which seems to be all concrete with ties molded into it which was installed on the Archer Av Line in Qns and the new South Ferry station but I have no idea of its actual construction or what it is called. I have noticed that on newer installations of both modified and regular type 2, the ties have short pieces of rebar through them to help stabilize them once the concrete is poured. |
