In fact during the construction of some of the dual contract lines the PSC realized that building extensions that could accommodate larger cars would serve no useful purpose since they would be connected to the original subway with its smaller dimensions. Thus while the upper portion of the Lex Av, Pelham and Jerome lines can accommodate BMT sized cars, the lower 7 Av IRT and Clark St lines cannot even though they were built with slightly improved clearances over the original IRT. |
