Also, many of the worst jams can be avoided by simply getting off and using parallel local streets. It seems that Cross Bronx jams tend not to spill onto the local streets the way jams on other area roads do. I suspect this is because so much of the traffic is trucks -- which may not be able to take local streets -- and also because much of the auto traffic that is just passing through between New England and New Jersey is afraid to get off the highway in the "dangerous" Bronx. (to be fair, I'm not sure I would have been nearly as adventurous driving in the area 25-30 years ago). |
