It is mildly ironic that you post this just a month after Sonoma's SMART group announced their selection of a Sumitomo/Nippon Sharyo consortium to supply their FRA compliant DMUs for their line, which should open around 2013 or 2014. American Railcar was the lowest scoring bidder and had the second highest purchase price.

IMHO Stadler's proposal for what is essentially two GTW 2/6s placed back to back with a gangway between them is particularly interesting. The integration of a small cab and a TW2500-like design would allow the train to be split at that part and operated as two independent cars while also allowing unfettered walk-through capability when operating as one two car train.
