FDNY Engine Company 343 |
|
Posted by JayZeeBMT on Sun Jul 31 00:25:41 2011 I was at the WTC today, where FDNY Engine 343, a fully-restored 1951 Mack pumper, was in attendance.E343 is a memorial apparatus, named in honor of the firefighters and EMTs who made the ultimate sacrifice on September 11, 2001. A plaque in the hose bed notes E343 was "formed on September 11, 2001", and lists the names of the fallen as members of the company. The classic rig is operated by the FDNY's Firefighter Family Transport Unit, which looks after the needs of injured or fallen firefighters' and EMTs' family members. It is carried on the FDNY Equipment Roster as "MP 5101"--(M)ack (P)umper, 1951, number 1. The truck displays memorial plaques and other items honoring those who perished on the darkest day in the history of New York City. Engine 343 will return as part of the 10th anniversary ceremonies at the WTC on September 11. Those of us who are still here, will never be the same people we were on that soft, bright Tuesday morning in Manhattan. |
