Fewer things are as common as confused early reports from the scene of major breaking news stories. I expect we'll see a couple more clarifications and revisions on this in the coming days. Given that the original DoD report stated OBL died during an "exchange of gunfire" with the SEALS (something more plausible, to me, than having him cowering, unarmed, behind his wife). I think the truth will be somewhere closer to the SEALs discovering him during their room-clearing search of OBL's house, trying to arrest him, and OBL resisting or one of his security men firing at the SEALs, precipitating OBL's death. 2. Remember that Pakistan is 9 hours ahead of us on the East Coast. By the time Obama made his televised report, it was almost midnight Sunday evening. That's likely a good 18-22 hours after the completion of the raid on the Bin Laden compound, which, according to DoD, was carried out during darkness. I can see them removing OBL's body from the compound, doing just enough of a forensic examination to positively ID him, and placing the body on a COD (Carrier Onboard Delivery) aircraft for eventual burial at sea. 3. Again, I'd be very surprised if OBL was alone and unarmed when the SEALs found him. It's more likely (to me, anyway), that OBL had security men or other assistance at hand when the raid occurred. One of OBL's relatives is now complaining that OBL was shot "in front of his family", suggesting there were others present. 4. President Obama said the photos of the dead OBL were not going to be released because of their possible inflammatory effect. OK, that's probably a canard, but I can see how the bad guys would use such pictures for their propaganda value. I expect such high-value photographs to surface on Wikileaks, or some other such "tell-all" site before too long, anyway. That's just my $0.02... |

The body needed to be dumped ASAP (a) because Muslim law says burial within 24 hours and (b) it needed to be presented as a fait accompli. What's the US benefit in showing pictures? Pictures can be faked, so they aren't proof of anything. It only gives the radicals something to incite people with. |

She is the one credited for giving final identification of Osama to the SEALs after he was already dead. She has said this to Pakistani TV. |
