I think that platform is fantastic. Not necessarily the contents but the fact that they were willing to explicitly state where they stand with no ambiguity. Of course it's safe.There was an incident in 1985 or 1986 where some white kids chased two black kids and one black kid got hit by a car and died. It made national headlines and JayZee-BMT still lives in the mid-80's. |

That's been their platform since Lawrence v. Texas came down. Note that Texas simply has its law as unenforceable at this time (TX along with OK and KS have not formally repealed their laws on the first two issues). |

Howard Beach is still, as it has been as far back as I can remember, hostile to people of color, to say nothing of gays. It's just not a place to go if you belong to either of those groups. Howard Beach was like that during my childhood in Far Rockaway, during my early EMS years when I was assigned to Station 41 (the Sandiford incident occurred during this time), and again when I lived in Far Rock as an adult in the early 2000s. |

I was in Dallas during 2009 covering the police raid on the Rainbow Lounge, a DFW-area gay bar. The DPD cops seemed to think that just because SCOTUS ruled on something, Texans "knew better". The upshot was, the week before, during the raid, the cops beat a patron into a coma, in full view of dozens of witnesses, then tried to cover it up with an absurd "gay panic" defense. Several cops were ultimately kicked off the force once word of this got out in the media, and one minute after the Rainbow Lounge PC was over, I was DART-ing my ass straight back to the airport. I was wheels-up less than two hours later.Sometimes the insects have just two legs, but carry guns. |

This happened a lot less than 20 years ago.An excerpt: Deep in Howard Beach, Queens, Kris Gounden has built up a beautiful home on a sprawling waterfront property where he lives with his wife and his four children. But Gounden is of Guyanese descent, and some of his white neighbors have undertaken a harassment campaign to run him out of the neighborhood, which became infamous for racism in the 1980s. Now there is a constant police presence outside his home in Hamilton Beach and a neighbor has been busted on felony hate-crime charges. Since he moved from Ozone Park in July last year, Gounden said he has put up with his next-door neighbors and their pals blocking his driveway, dumping garbage and urinating on his property - and logging daily complaints against him with city agencies. "He comes back with a baseball bat," Gounden said. "He said, 'F--k you, n----r. You don't belong in here. I will burn this house. I'll kill all of you.'" |

Dallas is pretty right wing. Houston is a little more moderate. If you ever get an invite to Austin though, don't turn it down. But generally, Texas *is* Jesusland ... and only slightly saner than Mississippi. :( |
