I just don't see them invading transit forums like the streetsblog types have. They ditch the car and ride buses for a few months and suddenly know all there is to know mass transit. They know for a fact that LA Metro is the worst agency in the world and that Omaha, NE has much better transit than LA even though they never rode a bus before they moved to LA. They go on critical mass rides where they block traffic evidently deciding that if they are miserable for their choices then the rest of us should suffer as well. |

We have the same problem with our roadside assistance spotting system at my employer. We'll end up with the re-designated name, and sometimes when you mention it, the caller will have nearly no idea of what you're talking about. Usually in most cases, if I have enough information, I'll skip over it, but otherwise, I'll double check with Google maps to confirm the location. Sadly, some of my other fellow colleagues aren't smart enough to do that, and thus end up with angry callers or perpetual calls waiting for somebody else to properly spot the caller. |

They are expensive but they can work if they are done right. If a private developer builds one as part of a mixed use development (retail on the ground level for example), they can recoup most if not all of the cost through parking fees and rents. A lot of New Urbanist types want to eliminate cars completely in many cities and neighborhoods. But many other planners (self included) believe you can have your cake and eat it too; cities and neighborhoods can be both transit and pedestrian friendly as well as accommodating to the automobile. |

Cars don't rule, but buses do suck!I went for a bus trip this past weekend and all I can say is that I would hate my life if I had to commute by bus in Los Angeles. They stop too often, are way too crowded and don't come often enough. And the traffic just seems so much worse when you're on a bus than in a car. And this was a weekend, not rush hour. Buses in Orange County, CA are great though. They just aren't frequent enough. |

But personally I think that new urbanism in general is a good thing. I love neighborhoods and towns that are walkable and mixed use. I also think that transit oriented development is a great way to take advantage of existing transit service. At the same time, there is no reason why these types of land uses and developments cannot comfortably accommodate the car at the same time. I don't know if you're familiar with greater DC, but the Rosslyn-Ballston corridor as well as Alexandria in Arlington County VA, and Silver Spring, MD are examples of this. |

I rode a local (260) because I didn't do my homework and didn't realize that the Rapids ran on Saturday on the route that I was on. Some routes run Rapids on weekends and some don't. Since the bus stops are physically separated I didn't know the Rapid was running until it passed us.In general the Rapids are much better than locals IMO. They skip 2/3 or 3/4 of the local stops. But they do stop at major intersections and transfer points so unless it's your home line and you want to avoid walking an extra couple of blocks the Rapids are better. |

Buses seem cool, but the experience of riding a busy bus in traffic leaves much to be desired.I like the idea of HBLR being extended to Staten Island. A group on Staten Island should get together and really push that. If they can get funding the MTA would most definitely be interested in overseeing the construction and operating it. |
