Posted by italianstallion on Mon Nov 16 15:46:45 2009 It's a shame there aren't more intelligent conservatives to elevate the debate on issues.Keene, Norquist and Barr Back Obama on Gitmo "David Keene of the American Conservative Union, Grover Norquist of Americans for Tax Reform, and former congressman/Libertarian presidential candidate Bob Barr are backing a proposal to send Guantanamo Bay detainees to a prison in Illinois, as well as President Obama’s plan to try terrorism suspects in federal courts. . . . From a statement issued by the trio: We are confident that the government can preserve national security without resorting to sweeping and radical departures from an American constitutional tradition that has served us effectively for over two centuries. Civilian federal courts are the proper forum for terrorism cases. Civilian prisons are the safe, cost effective and appropriate venue to hold persons convicted in federal courts. Over the last two decades, federal courts constituted under Article III of the U.S. Constitution have proven capable of trying a wide array of terrorism cases, without sacrificing either national security or fair trial standards. Likewise the federal prison system has proven itself fully capable of safely holding literally hundreds of convicted terrorists with no threat or danger to the surrounding community. The scaremongering about these issues should stop." |

Keene and Norquist are idots? I'm surprised at you. Keene was a prime force behind the Hoffman win, uh, loss in NY-23. Oh well, he is an idiot.But it shows that conservative principles, properly applied, can yield a rational result in some cases. Actually, I feel the same way about Paterson -- he is an idiot, outnumbered by fellow liberals . |

I am so worried about the RWNBM doing two things about this.... First being saying something they shouldn't and creating a situation where he gets to go free because they compromised the trial. Second is saying something stupid or untrue (they do so on a daily basis) that grabs the attention/ire of the Muslim world and creates a backlash. Third is both happening.We still have troops over there, and they had better learn fast to grow up and STFU. |

The problem is we are still at war, a war started by this person. Can you imagine if while we were still fighting the Japs we captured Adm Yamamoto and brought him to trial in US Federal Court for Pearl Harbor? We have never brought combatants into civilian courts while we were still fighting. |

I doubt he will ever go free. That, however, is a moot point. The main point is that during time of war we can't have a public trial where, G-d forbid, our enemies learn our intelligence and questioning tactics. These things will come out in a public trial, the defense will insist.And why should we give the Islamofascists a public forum to spew their garbage anyway? When spies and sabateurs were caught in previous wars they were brought to justice fast and executed. |

Like Pigs said, we aren't at war now either. It involves a LOT of paperwork, and like so much else in that administration, nobody bothered. And even assuming that somehow we DID declare war, we were still not "at war" at the time the attack happened. As to learning about our methods, I'm pretty certain the media shot that cow ages ago.But if you guys are THAT scared of terrorists, you're welcome to send them up here ... we'll treat 'em right. :) |
