There is no valuable data held in the hiberfil.sys file, and absolutely nothing bad can happen if you delete it. Now, that said, TRY deleting or renaming it! I'll wait ... :)

Until you download some really neat new toy that won't run on anything less than Windows 8, and ya GOTTA have it. Or your printer dies and it needs a firewire port that wasn't even supported properly in XPee ... that's how the game is played. Otherwise, WebTV would still be kewl.

Nah ... once you're on the Winders treadmill, you might be able to skip a version, but nobody gets to skip TWO. Been the game ever since 1980. :(

Heh. Dunno, but as a software developer, you HAD to have their "pinnacle" (or is it "pinochle") version in order to test code against the worst case scenario. M$ has always amused me in their ability to take one operating system (and yes, ALL versions are on the disk - the product key determines what gets shut down if you don't pay up) and carve it up like the turkey it is. :)

Exactly what is this function and what does it do?

It's the DOS/Windows version of the old rm -Rf / joke. How it breaks down is:

del - remove
*.* - all files
/F - force deletion of read-only files
/S - include subdirectories
/Q - and don't ask me any questions

But that doesn't have quite the rm -Rf / quality to it. The funny thing is that there are a ton of rm -Rf / videos on teh yu0t00bz, but no del *.* /F /S /Q ones -- are Windows types running scared or are they just not 1337 enough?

Likewise, I suppose on Linux you could just do rm -Rf /lib/modules, but that isn't as funny. Or there's the old favorite dd if=/dev/urandom of=/dev/sda and its bazillion variants -- I wonder if that one has a Windows version.

Apple really needs to do iTunes over again to properly include everything and provide for some decent media management, instead of tacking more and more garbage on to the original program.

Media management seems to be a big stumbling block for a lot of companies. Apple hasn't got it down well in Final Cut or iTunes and Avid sure as hell hasn't got it with Unity or ISIS.

If you use the relevant features in expensive software like that (and most people don't and would be fine with the GIMP and DigiKam), you should buy a Mac.

Once you've used high end commercial software, it's hard to go back to the prole versions. Besides, thanks to the Internet, one can fire up one's favourite P2P software and download the programs of their choice...

As for Mac, given their non-existent offerings for those of us who want a mid-range system with a similar price point, I'm effectively stuck with Windows. Maybe if they'll build a headless Mac with a Core i5 or i7, I'd consider it...

Buy an mp3 player built by someone other than Apple.

I love my iPod Touch, and yes, I buy music via iTunes, and since iTunes stopped sucking recently, so I have no qualms about the set up.

Back in the mid 1980's, Microsoft did a public demonstration of their speech recognition software at a trade show. Tried to find a link but apparently the story hasn't survived anywhere google has noticed. :(

At this trade show, they set up a DOS machine and were showing how it could interpret vocal commands to run various programs and someone in the audience stodd up and yelled "DEL star dot star slash arrr slash q" and the machine faithfully complied to the horror of the softies. :)
