Computer issues- Vista |
|
Posted by TransitChuckG on Wed Oct 21 10:55:11 2009 Yesterday afternoon, My computer would not recognize the following:DVD-RW (E) Compact Flash (F) XD/SM (H) Memory Stick (L) SD Card (J) Removable Disc (K) I restarted and nothing changed. I pulled my plug out of the wall and rebooted, and everything came back. Vista is wonderful. My External drive also changed names from (F) to (G), no problem there. I ordered Windows 7. |

I'm wondering if that's why my HP laptop* [with Vista] kept shutting down randomly?Thankfully my other laptop on XP has been working fine since the first day i used it. *probably not, but still it uses Vista. |

From what I heard (although Selkirk will have to correct me if I am wrong), I heard that "Windows 7" is just a band aid version of Vista, because Vista has a stigma now. |

What I've heard about Windows 7 is what XP was to Millennium (although I had no issues with Millenium). Superior product and fixes the problems and some bloat that came with Vista. Will tell you if that's true when my copy comes. |

I know Selkirk weighed in on this as well. It gives me a bit of a relief that the problem can be fixed. [It's at the shop getting repaired or replaced.] Hopefully it'll work fine when it comes back in maybe 2 wks. |

Sometimes/somehow with plug and play devices (which is most of them these days), configuration information gets stuck in the hardware and requires a complete power down, rather than just a reset to fix.I’m not blaming Vista specifically for this, as it has happened to me with XP as well. |

What happened to Chuck was a corrupted hibernate file, happens with Win7 too. Even XP though to a lesser extent. The file is used to speed up startup by writing out where the machine was at when it was last used. Sometimes it craps the bed, and when rebooted, Blista remembers and does it again. :) |

Windows 7 is Vista with all the patches, along with a few new gimmicks. Underlying operating system though is still the parts of OS/2 that IBM didn't want way back when. Microsoft called it "NT." Since then, only cosmetics and bandaids. FWIW, if you're in Vista world, the upgrade might not be worth it though since everything that's coming out for Win7 has already been bandaided on Vista.Vista is to XPee what WinME was to Win98. Win7 is like WinMe2 and not the improvement Win2000 was to NT4. Windows 7 seems to be little more than a marketing tool than anything substantial, but at least they're not calling it "Vista" anymore which appears to be the actual goal. :( |

I had to install Vista on a few machines to test out the code I was writing at the time. Once I determined that my code was cool with Vista, first thing I did with those machines was douche them and go back to XPee. Couldn't *stand* Blista.I suspect that the hibernate file goes away after a complete power off and that's how Chuck managed to "win" ... :) |

I've a Mac person, but I've used PCs at my current job (11 years), used most Windows from 95 to XP, and XP is the only Windows that I've really liked. My job refused to upgrade to Vista, we'll see if they go to Windows 7 (although there is no money for new computers right now). |

What jerks my chain is MicroSwitsh's habit of ignoring the day of the week you set up on the MS Upgrade site, they still send them when they want to not when you want them to.I always see what updates are pending when the icon shows up as MS has a habit to send updates for Office 2007 when you still have Office 2003, so I always uncheck those. |

I didn't have the heart to tell them that when you install Winblows Se7en, the first thing that happens is your email gets ripped out, moviemaker, most of everything the least bit useful ... if you "upgrade" (still dying laughing about that) to 7, you lose most of what you enjoyed in Xpoo or Blista ...Out of fear of antitrust headaches, Microsoft has stripped Windows 7 of some important accessory programs. Believe it or not, software for managing photos, editing videos, reading PDF documents, maintaining a calendar, managing addresses, chatting online or writing e-mail doesn’t come with Windows 7. But you can download them after giving Microsoft your personals. Heh. Yeah, that solves the EU. :) I played with Win7 through the pre-release cycle. It's Blista with chrome hubcaps and no tires. No thanks. I'll use my OWN operating system instead. MUCH saner. Heh. |

Ballmer still thinks Lehman Brothers is still in business I guess. :)But AIN'T that BALLS?!?!?! Every month, the number of bandaids required for Winblows gets bigger and bigger, and the number of bandaids for Winblows7 keeps going up too. Maybe they should install Linux or something. Heh. Meanwhile, I sit here laughing my ass off when I visit sites that tell me that "Windows says your computer is infected" when it's running on BSD ... and nothing happens other than I click the X and it goes away. Heh. Maybe Winblows users should upgrade to a Comodore64 ... ain't been hacked yet! (grin) |

At least twice each week the cursor floats and jumps around my screen. The only way I can control it is if I press the mousepad extremely hard but then it only moves about 1/10" at a time. Once in awhile I can regain control by slowly moving it to a link and clicjing but it normally requires reboot. I heard Vista users experience this phenomenon more than occasionally. I also got the Blue Screen of Death for the first time last week after running Vista for about 6 months, and just to piss me off, it happened again earlier this week. |
