Nedick's |
|
Posted by Union Turnpike on Thu Oct 1 20:48:36 2009 Do you recall the original Nedick's and have you been to the new Nedick's?The name Nedick's derives from "Neeley" and "Dickinson". These were the names of two business owners of Nedick's which was founded in 1910. The new Nedick's uses the slogan "Always A Pleasure". |

They almost made the franks that really sucked taste almost edible. Now if only real franks such as at Nathans, Katz', or any Kosher Deli had those toasted rolls!!! |

It was very dirty in the 60's too according to my parents and relatives. One of the things that amazes my parents when they come visit is how dramatically cleaner the city is now compared to when they lived here. If one goes back and sees pictures of Manhattan streets from the 20's and before it was even dirtier still. I suppose it may have been fairly clean in the 40's and 50's. My aunt thinks so. |

Look at the license plate on the cab. It had yellow numbers on black background. And one cab looks like a 1957 Ford. 1957 and 1960, the plates were yellow on black. I tried to magnify the photos but could not read the theater marquees. That would give me an idea when this photo was taken. Also theres a red and cream Mack STS (Surface Transportation System)on what might be the M-42 (pre-MaBSTOA). Bill Newkirk |

When I was in middle school I took my first ever date to a movie and then for a hot dog and orange soda at the little luncheonette inside Gimbel's in the Bergen Mall on Route 4 in Paramus. I didn't have alot of money from allowance and I was too proud and embarrassed to ask my mother for some. Oh well, at least I tried. Speaking of losers, Loeser's Deli on W. 231st off the Broadway Local is a hole in the wall but make arguably the best hot dogs and corned beef sandwiches in the city. Kevin knows the place well. |

I get the Galaxies and Fairlanes mixed up.Galaxie was introduced as a trim level on the Fairlane for 1959. It didn't become its own model until 1962, when the Fairlane became a midsize car. As Andee said, both cars in the picture are probably Customs, the bottom trim level usually used for fleet purchases. I second that it's a 1960 in the foreground and a '59 in the background. |
