As I understand Fascism (from the old Roman symbol for the magistrate's authority; the word refers to rods around an axe-handle), it exalts the state above the individual; it urges loyalty to a single supreme leader; it is desperately anti-Communist and against other left-wing political ideals; it also exalts corporatism as a form of government; and indeed it is very totalitarian and employs violence and propaganda to enforce its agenda. Muslim extremism would be better described as a form of theocratic totalitarianism, correct? It does not recognize any state; it is against both right and left wings of Westernized political systems; it certainly does not want corporations, but rather clerics to hold the rule of law . . .

But that's how the word is generally used today. For the Muslim extremists, the state and Islam are one and the same. In that context, the word "Islamofascism" is perfectly appropriate.
