Some people have nothing better to do than mind other peoples' business.

That's been a fine tradition in America ever since the Puritans showed up. Sure, they fled persecution in England, but that didn't make them democratic. They just wanted to find a place where they would be top dogs and able to dictate their own brand of tyranny.

Sounds like you go in for urban legends. What didn't you get about no titles of nobility in the US . . . ? or people like Patrick Henry saying stuff like "We have no sovereign but God and no king but Jesus"?

Not to mention that many of them owned other human beings as personal property. Maybe they didn't have everything quite figured out

Worry more about the slavery that's going on in Africa right now, sponsored by Red China and the EU. And if you really want to go back that far in history, look at the non-English-speaking empires out of Europe and how long they continued slavery for. You're living in one of the first two modern societies to outlaw slavery (the British Empire did it in 1807; the US in 1848). Would you like us to be like the rest of the world now?
