They found a photo of her to slant the article. I doubt that is a photo they took when she "heard the news".

Anyway, case in point of the Palin obsession, but it's been said before....

Perhaps you may not be aware of this but;

1) you cannot deport citizens of this country from this country.
2) People in this country illegally are criminals.
3) Criminal aliens should be deported!

But don't let these little facts disturb you. Go lie down and rest your head until the smoke subsides.

She failed though in one particular way: refusing to meet with the media for 3 weeks. THAT is what caused the problem in the first place.

These people are not yet permanent residents. Their legal status was derived through citizen spouses.

In this particular case, I am dead seat against deportation if this was the cause for falling out of status. And the law covering that needs to be changed.

Someday we will know more about the McCain-Palin 2008 campaign, but ultimately I think that the following will, more or less, become clear:

1) Sarah Palin isn't a moron. This is what many of us would be led to think, but I don't for a moment believe that it's right. I doubt that she is a genius too, but few geniuses either go into or make it in politics anyway. She strikes me as being average to above average in intelligence, and above average in effort, except

2) Sarah Palin was a huge failure in presenting herself favorably during the 2008 campaign. I think that this can be attributed to her acceptance of really poor advice (she wouldn't be the first), and also a failure to just speak to the issues instead of worrying about how you come off presenting yourself. Sure she sounds funny, but plenty of quite capable people do too. I feel that she obsessed over image to the point of forgetting to refresh her memory about what her prospective President's positions were. It's a tough thing to overshadow Joe 'Foot in Mouth' Biden, after all!

3) Sarah Palin is better looking than most politicians. Unfortunately, while this plays well for relatively more handsome men, apparently this is a political liability for women, at least when you don't run an issues-centered agenda.

4) Sarah Palin is a good sport. I like needling and teasing, and I will say that although I disagree with Governor Palin on many issues, she has largely been a good sport about being the butt of many jokes, much better than Barack Obama, who has been staid and stuck up, in my view. (Think of the New Yorker cartoon, or the Bernie Mac episode).

5) Sarah Palin wasn't the reason why the GOP folded so neatly in the 2008 elections. Mostly, it was the fact that the GOP was in charge, and they failed to deliver. A lot of people in the GOP blame Palin when they should really wonder why they are increasingly or already in fact not a national party. Nothing like a convenient scapegoat.

6) Sarah Palin played into the Democratic campaign plan of competing images and icons. My own view is that she was not the right candidate given that the way to have the best chance of saving the GOP would be to paint then Senator Obama as a successful opportunist with limited experience who obsesses over image and who failed to make explicit his policies. (Then again, the "McSame" campaign didn't exactly come in with bright, bold ideas, mostly just this pathetic repetition of 'maverick' ad nauseam.)

So I don't think that Sarah Palin is a buffoon, a pig in lipstick, or anything like that. I do feel that she made many strategic errors, but surely she isn't the first politician in history to do THAT!

I think it was changed for the categories that you mentioned and Chuck Schumer was the sponsor. I remember the story about a Russian guy who's fiance' died on 9/11. He was here on a temporary fiance' visa awaiting permanent residency once they got married. Needless to say, he became an illegal immigrant on 9/11 and deportation was ordered. It made it in the news and the law was changed.

You are correct, but you do have to admit that Tina Fey had Palin down pat on SNL.

Yes!

Notice in the 2008 campaign for the White House, who got 90% of the attention. It wasn't John McCain.

I chalk that up more to the fact that McCain was pretty much destined to lose, so why not focus on something more 'newsworthy'?

Strategically, I think that wisdom counsels that Sarah Palin sit out the 2012 race. We shall see what actually happens....

I suspect if Sarah tries another attempt at high public office, Tina will be at the ready.

My favorite sketch was one of the last ones before the election, with the real John McCain (in what was the only moment during the campaign where he came off as a genuine human being) and Tina Fey as Sarah Palin. The premise was that McCain's campaign didn't have the big bucks to rent out a major network station, so he agreed to pay his way by hawking goods on QVC while making his presidential pitch! Toward the end, Palin-Fey gets in a few seconds of her own, announcing that she's "going rogue!", and is selling her own t-shirts, while McCain is temporarily otherwise occupied.

And here appears to be the sketch that I had in mind. Like I said, it was the single greatest John McCain performance of the election.

transcript:

SENATOR JOHN MCCAIN - "Good evening, my fellow Americans, I'm John McCain.

TINA FEY AS GOV. SARAH PALIN - "And, you know, I'm just Sarah Palin."

MCCAIN - "The final days of any election are the most essential. This past Wednesday, Barack Obama purchased airtime on three major networks. We, however, can only afford QVC."

FEY AS PALIN - "These campaigns sure are expensive. (She strokes the rich fabric of her jacket's lapel)

MCCAIN - "They sure are. So tonight, we come before you to give you some final remarks on our campaign."

FEY AS PALIN - "And, as part of our agreement with the QVC folks, we're gonna try and sell you some stuff."

MCCAIN - "This has been an historic campaign, so why not remember it with our line of collectible products. Such as ten commemorative plates that celebrates the ten Town Hall debates between Senator Obama and myself. They're blank, he wouldn't agree to those debates. Too bad. They're still nice plates.

FEY AS PALIN - "And who wouldn't want the complete set of limited edition 'Joe' action figures? There's 'Joe the Plumber,' 'Joe Six-Pack,' and my personal favorite, 'Joe Biden.' If you pull this cord, he talks for forty-five minutes.

(SHE pulls cord)

JASON SUDEIKIS AS SEN. BIDEN (O.C.) -- "I take the Amtrak to work every day. Then -- after work -- I take it home. Let me tell you something about Joe Biden..."

MCCAIN - "It's great if you want to clear out a party."

FEY AS PALIN - "Or keep deer out of your yard."

MCCAIN - "But we're not just here to sell products. We're here with a message. We are at a crossroads in American history. The leadership of the next four years will have many challenges and I believe my experience and my leadership will make a difference.

FEY AS PALIN - "Also too - sorry -- I need to remind you that there are just two minutes left in our 'Washington outsider jewelry extravaganza.'"

MCCAIN - "Are you someone who likes fine jewelry and also respects a politician who can reach across the aisle? If so, you can't go wrong with McCain Fine Gold.

(CINDY MCCAIN displays the "McCain Fine Gold" like a game show model)

MCCAIN (CONT'D) - "It commemorates the McCain Feingold Act -- and also looks great with evening wear. Thank you, Cindy."

FEY AS PALIN - "And what busy hockey mom wouldn't want to freshen up her home with Sarah Palin's 'Ayers Fresheners.' You plug these into the wall when something doesn't quite smell quite right. Also too, it's good because it reminds people about William Ayers."

MCCAIN - "Having trouble cutting through a tough piece of pork? Not anymore, with John McCain's complete set of pork knives. 'They Cut The Pork Out!'"

FEY AS PALIN - "So instead of going to one of those elite department stores with their liberal agendas and over-priced items and their gotcha return policies that violate your First Amendment rights, why not do your holiday shopping with us? (SHE turns to a different camera) Okay, listen up everybody, I am goin' rogue right now so keep your voices down. Available now, we got a buncha' these 'Palin in 2012' T-shirts. Just try and wait until after Tuesday to wear 'em okay? Because I'm not goin' anywhere. And I'm certainly not goin' back to Alaska. If I'm not goin' to the White House, I'm either runnin' in four years or I'm gonna be a white Oprah so, you know, I'm good either way."

MCCAIN - "What's going on over there, Sarah?"

FEY AS PALIN - "Oh...just talkin' about taxes." (SHE winks)

MCCAIN - "Look, would I rather be on three major networks? Of course, but I'm a true maverick -- a Republican without money. And I'm not like my opponent; my only showbiz connections are Jon Voight and Heidi from 'The Hills.' So, I'm here on QVC, and like QVC, this campaign promises you three things: quality, value and convenience."

FEY AS PALIN - "And great deals on juicers."

MCCAIN - "So when you go to the polls on Tuesday remember, 'Country First,' as a reminder all undergarments are non-refundable and Live from New York, it's Saturday Night!!!

JournalSquare-K-Car couldn't guess what this bird is (he thought it was a pigeon). Can you, or are you as far gone as he?

Second of all, what a racist piece of garbage. what project did you crawl out from under?

Shouldn't your invective be more appropriately targeted towards the alleged criminal described in the article rather then the messenger?

It accurately describes her.

What the heck has gotten into you? I had you on the "yeah, he's a liberal, but I can tolerate him because he's generally not a nutjob" list. Do I now have to move you into the "asshole leftard" list with guys like RiverLINE3501, SMAZ and UWS Greg?

Or is it pointless to distinguish between the two anymore?

How many times has he said that he comes here just to tweak people? You make a post about assassinating the President and don't accept negative comments but when he makes an obvious joke about deporting an American family, suddenly everything gets serious.

That's not a neutral stance.
