It serves as a warning to people with 56k dial up modems. The pictures will take a long time to load for them. Yes, to "k" means kilobytes.

Dial-up is going away almost as fast as the Slants are going on that final barge ride.

As Cable and Fiber continue to add speed, modem sales are becoming a lost commodity. A recent visit to both Office Depot and Staples, only 1 brand of dial-up modem for a computer was available.

Baltimore County Public Library, at one time a dial-up ISP (they did not advertise it, but applications were available at all Library branches, no longer offers it. Current customers can continue (for a while, a drop-dead notice has not been issued yet) but most customers went to broadband.)

Just downloading an upgrade to an anti-virus program on dial-up takes several hours.

That's not true, Dan Lawrence. At worst, you are completely wrong. At best, you made a very poor analogy.

The slants are almost all gone. They are projected to be completely out of service in the near future.

However, dial-up is NOT almost all gone, and is NOT projected to be completely gone in the near future. A quick GOOGLE search confirms this. I'll even give you some links.

Because the relationship of Baud rate to the communications capacity of the channel has changed significantly over recent years.

And it’s now essentially to the point where there are no more gains available since transmission rates are just about at the theoretical capacity of the telephone channel.
