When I first read the post, I was simply shocked—Dante has been around for many years, over which myself and others got to appreciate him as the most integral peripheral person to ever exist. While he would never force himself out into the center of attention, everyone around would know of his presence for he would add a degree of spontaneity to any situation which in his mind was getting too boring. Be it a hilarious well placed observation or a simple bikeyorph, Dante could always liven up the group dynamic. Dante’s full presence could never fully be understood from a message board.I know for many us younger railfans(at least for me) this is the first loss of a friend in our own generation. While all death is tragic, there is something about the loss of someone so young, as they should have had so much more time to live and experience life. Most importantly, To his family, I must say this—The loss I am feeling is tremendous, as I know it is for all those who have met Dante. It is impossible to even think of how awful this is for you guys. Wherever you are now old friend, I hope you enjoy it. --Lincoln McMahon Ps: Please do not feel any guilt for posting under his handle—I cannot imagine Dante would want his friends left in the dark about his condition. |

He was very intelligent and very funny; I tried never to miss his posts, because I would either learn something, or be on the floor laughing at one of his trademark non-sequiturs. I met him a bunch of times but never got to know him that well in person; still, I count him among my friends and always have considered him a vital member of our community. The sadness and shock from this news keeps reminding me of the day nearly three years ago when I was standing on the platform at Broadway Junction - Dante's handle at the time - and received a call from BMTGuy telling me that Dante was in the ICU. So much time has passed since then that I thought he was well on his way to beating this thing. He was such a presence on this board, it's going to feel very different without him. |

To the very end, Dante carried his trademark Hawaiian Punch bottle.I first met Dante almost 4 years ago, when his handle was Dtrain22. it was the 2003 Memorial weekend 7/LIRR G.O., when the LIRR was utilizing a special free shuttle train between Shea Stadium and Main St-Flushing. We met briefly because he was taking pictures at Shea while I was boarding the LIRR train to Flushing. Over time, I would read Dante's amusing posts, his photoshopped pictures brought humor, his claim to fame that he ate 87 pieces of Starburst candies, but most of all, he was a nice person to be with during the Ultimate Ride I. He gave us an angle in Subtalk/Subchat that is (now) totally irreplacable and impeccable. He was fun to be around, like a magician pulling out a rabbit to amuse his audience. And he was unselfish in his ways, I kept praying for him. I visited Dante at Brookdale after the Ultimate Ride, the kid was holding his own. I will close this post with a lasting memory: |

I only met Dante once that I recall, but we had corresponded occasionally over the years. He was a fine young man.Quoting a well-known poem by Rabbi Alvin I. Fine, z'il: and death a destination And life is a journey: From childhood to maturity and youth to age; From innocence to awareness and ignorance to knowing; From foolishness to desecration and then perhaps to wisdom. From weakness to strength or from strength to weakness and often back again; From health to sickness and we pray to health again. From offense to forgiveness from loneliness to love from joy to gratitude from pain to compassion from grief to understanding from fear to faith. From defeat to defeat to defeat until looking backwards or ahead We see that victory lies not at some high point along the way but in having made the journey step by step a sacred pilgrimage. Birth is a beginning and death a destination And life is a journey; A sacred journey to life everlasting. Until next time... Anon_e_mouse |
