I guess first arrest is different than first offense in a city where like 20% of murders are solved. They used to hang horse thieves. Now kids just being kids is a societal norm. It used to be a great city. |

It’s the result of a state law so it’s democracy. Minneapolis does have much more crime that it used to but you tend to get what you vote for. That said I don’t know that this approach to first offenders is responsible for the increase.Speaking of voting, living in California I notice that voters take zero responsibility for anything that happens. It must be human nature because everyone blames someone else regardless of whether the cause was a proposition or politician that they themselves voted for. |

It’s the result of a state law so it’s democracyWe are supposed to be a republic, not a democracy. It's in the Constitution that the federal government "shall guarantee to the states a republican form of government" too. Do you know the difference between a republic and a democracy? And yes, that is the correct definition. |

According to ChatGPT:The United States is both a democracy and a republic — specifically, it’s a constitutional republic with a representative democracy. Here’s the breakdown: Democracy means that power ultimately comes from the people — they have the right to vote and influence government decisions. Republic refers to a system where the country is governed by elected representatives and an elected leader (like a president), rather than a monarch or dictator. Representative democracy is the form of democracy in the U.S., where citizens elect representatives to make decisions and pass laws on their behalf. Constitutional republic adds the layer that the government operates under a constitution that limits its powers and protects individual rights, even against the will of the majority. So when people say “The U.S. is a republic, not a democracy,” they’re usually emphasizing the importance of constitutional limits and representative governance — but it’s not a contradiction to say it’s both. They go hand-in-hand in this context. |
