That in turn was based on The Beggar's Opera from 1728.Also, "Mack" in the song is short for MacHeath. I'm kinda fond of Louis Armstrong's version myself. |

MacHeath "The Knife" in turn was (believed by some to be) based on James MacLaine, an Irish migrant to London. He was hanged in 1661 for highway robbery. |

These number one songs in 1943 began with White Christmas by Bing Crosby which went to #1 on 31st October, 1942 and remained at the top spot for 11 weeks. The last number one song of 1943 was Paper Doll by Mills Brothers which went to #1 on 6th November, 1943 and remained at the top spot for 12 weeks. The US song that was number one for the longest single run in 1943 was Paper Doll by Mills Brothers which went to number one on 6th November, 1943 and stayed at the top slot for 12 weeks. |
