His personality but much worse his character keep him out. Until I watched the HBO documentary I had a somewhat favorable opinion of him but shedding light on the 360 degree view of what was going on and what went on after 1989 he lost my support. There is a reason he’s been ineligible for 35 years and I’ll leave it at that.

In fact it explains why all this happened the way it did. He wasn’t simply calling a bookie to bet on ball games. He had connections to dirty people and that really stains the integrity of the game. 1919 was only 70 years earlier.

But some of the players you list wouldn't be on my ballots because I don't think they had HOF worthy careers (PED use aside). In the case of Albert Pujols, he isn't eligible to be in the HOF until 2028 but I don't think anyone expects him to be anything other than a first ballot inductee.

As for whether or not he was on steroids I have no idea. Whether it even matters, to each their own. I see Jack Clark, for one, had "facts" re. Pujols and his PED use but then, once Pujols lawyered up and filed defamation and the parties settled out of court, Clark completely retracted his accusation and insisted he had simply "misspoke". Don't insult us, Jack Clark... how about that? Ryan Braun is an embarrassment. I respect those who feel otherwise but I just find it unseemly to mention the players in OP with the Ernie Banks' of the world. Ryan Braun is an embarrassment.

And You're right that when Giamatti died, his chances of getting into the hall evaporated. The plan was that in two years he was going to appeal his lifetime ban and expected it to be overturned. But Fay Vincent, Giamatti's successor was a hard liner and kept the ban in place. The rest as they say is history

Yet as we legalize pot, we look to let those convicted of its use, out of jail but pete must remain the intractable example. Let's forgive Andrew weiner and Andrew cuomo. May they rise from their own ashes but Pete rose must forever suffer for his sins. He will prove us a moral people.

In 2004, he finally admitted that he bet on baseball. He bet on the Reds to win when he was player/manager but never against them. As far as anyone knows, the Reds never "threw" a game to have Rose win a bet. that was the only baseball betting he did.
