Supposedly the driver had a heart attack or other sudden cardiac issue. It may be time for the MTA to take a hard look at whether their medical standards for drivers are really sufficient. |

Heart attacks are incredibly unpredictable. Say someone has high blood pressure and high cholesterol, but not crazily high. Do you say they can't be a bus driver because they have a 50% higher chance (but still not a huge chance) than the average person of having a heart attack in the next 10 years? |

Like I said there should be government oversight to prevent these issues. If you drive a Tesla it knows when you are not looking at the road and with most of these cars they will stop on their own if you are unresponsive. Maybe it's time to add this to buses. |

Heart attacks are incredibly unpredictable. Say someone has high blood pressure and high cholesterol, but not crazily high. Do you say they can't be a bus driver because they have a 50% higher chance (but still not a huge chance) than the average person of having a heart attack in the next 10 years?Certainly there would be no issues in the circumstances you describe. Yet assume that the driver candidate you describe is also morbidly obese and is a diabetic with poor blood sugar control. These things often go together. He then would be at greatly elevated risk of a heart attack or other sudden medical episode and absolutely should not be allowed to drive a bus. At some point the risk is just too high, though obviously determining that point will not always be easy or fair. I do not know if the MTA's bus driver medical standards are similar to the federal Department of Transportation's medical standards for a commercial driver's license. Supposedly, the DOT's standards are very lenient. The MTA's standards should be greater than the DOT's, as driving a bus in heavy city traffic while dealing with passengers seems a lot more stressful than long haul trucking. |
