Everything you need to know about the British election

Posted by Orange Blossom Special on Fri Jul 5 09:47:12 2024

One quote is all you need to know.
----
Anand Menon, professor of European Politics and Foreign Affairs at King’s College London, said British voters were about to see a marked change in political atmosphere from the tumultuous “politics as pantomime” of the last few years.

“I think we’re going to have to get used again to relatively stable government, with ministers staying in power for quite a long time, and with government being able to think beyond the very short term to medium-term objectives,” he said.
----

Once a lib democrat is in power anywhere in the world, they stay in power and no deepstate protests can kick them out for quite a long time the way they can do anyone half-conservative.

So you think medium term objectives are bad?

"quite a long time,"

AlM defines this as "medium term".

I know the British like to understate. Even those minority ones that dont' list a place of birth, even though they have a heavy accent.

LOL. The actual quote referred to medium term objectives. I guess you forgot to read all the way to the bottom.

Perhaps "quite a long time" refers to a full 5 year term for the Prime Minister, as opposed to Theresa May (3 years), Boris Johnson (3 years), Liz Truss (50 days), and Rishi Sunak (2 years).

Five main issues lunatics at Sailer's are talking about in a discussion on the British elections:

1. Muslims
2. Muslims
3. Muslims
4. Muslims
5. Muslims

Thanks for agreeing and confirming my point about libtards in the OP. Looks liek they will quiet down for about a decade finally.

Labour got 60% of the seat with 33% percent of the vote by contrast in 2016 Trump got 55% of the electoral vote with 45% of the popular vote.

And yet sp freaks out more at the 55-45 breakdown than anyone will in the 60-33 ratio. Very interesting stuff.

A political party shouldn't be able to acquire unchecked power with 33% of the vote.

I wonder how much land britian will cede to balestein in this farce.

I guess the United Kingdom needs to hire you as a consultant to help them amend their Constitution.

PS. I agree the British system has major flaws, as does the US system. But, you know, Tradition!

PPS. Likud got 22% of the vote in the last election. Their power since the last election has only been slightly less than Labour's will be. Trudeau got 33% of the vote in the last election and his opponent got 34%, and he's pretty powerful too.

Many of the systems have their problems.

People make it sound like the electoral college is a unique aberration.

Likud hasn't been able to anything on domestic policy and has only gotten what it has with the support of other parties.

The US is unique in character if not in effect.

Canada and the UK are first past the post in a large number of districts of roughly equal size, each with one vote.

The US Presidential election is first past the post in a relatively small (51) number of districts, each of which have a widely differing number of votes depending on their size.

In the UK and Canada, many, many districts (100 or more) are swing districts. In the US, only a few are. It may be a similar number percentage wise, but there are so few total districts that if only 15% are competitive, it doesn't amount to many.

Over 30 years ago already, I was in London on a business trip and I came at the start of the weekend to do some sightseeing. Almost no one on the streets on Sunday spoke a language I could understand. If it was English, it was cockney.
