"Because Trump and friends have been announcing how easy it is to get into the US"

Huh?? If that was true, why is Trump still hell bent on building a wall?

He didn't build much wall while he was president.

He is only hell bent on winning elections.

"He is only hell bent on winning elections."

No surprise there. After all he's a politician

"He didn't build much wall while he was president."

He built hundreds of miles of wall. Construction was stopped by Biden when he took office.

He had to fight the RINOs tooth and nail to get that much wall built too.

The U.S. built new barriers along 455 miles (732 km),[6][7][8] 49 miles (79 km) of which previously had no barrier.

So 49 new miles and 406 refurbished miles. Out of 1950 miles in total.

He isn't getting the 3 additional terms he would need to finish it off at that rate!

Other presidents have dealt with opposition and got stuff done. Trump was just incompetent and concerned only with “winning” and not actually governing.

He was also so confrontational about it. If he'd presented it as here's a problem, and here's a reasonable solution, he would have gotten more support.

But he insisted as presenting it as the evil Democrats are trying to ruin our country.

And he's doing it again now. Biden and Senate Republicans have reached a basic agreement on the border. It can always be amended in the future. But Trump opposes it because the evil Democrats will get a bit of relief if it passes.

On a related note, he's so capricious, no one can trust him on his word. Early in his first term, the Democrats and Republicans were close to a deal, when Trump suddenly changed his mind and torpedoed it. That habit of breaking agreements severely reduced other countries' trust in our word.
