Stonewall

Posted by cortelyounext on Fri Jun 28 15:23:36 2019

As arguably the leading racist and foremost hypocrite on this board, monikers which mean names bestowed upon me by practically all of you people, I wish all my queer friends a glorious weekend. I will be working Washington Dulles to San Juan on Sunday so although I will not be front and center for the Queer Liberation March in NYC understand this - I will be there in spirit. On this day, the 50th Anniversary of the Stonewall Riot, I wish you Peace.

This also means you won't, alas, be able to take part in the Heritage Of Pride Match on Sunday, either. As the sole double-threat member of this board, I shall march in your stead.

Fair winds and smooth landings.

Sad about the High Line. Should have kept it open all the way to St. John's Park Terminal and converted that former freight terminal into a Metro-North terminal.

So like I am sitting on a United 757 in Newark and an Airbus just blew slides on the runway. There are EMS and ambulances and NYPA around our airplane probably for the evacuees. The airport was closed for an extended period with resulting diversions and recoveries but just opened back up. No matter since I will be delayed preparing my galley in Denver for the flight to Washington Dulles. I do the dreaded double duty tomorrow - Washington to San Juan in the morning then the “Redeye” to New York. I will be serving Bruges Confectionary cookies with Illy coffee. At least on the “Redeye” the passengers will be sleeping so my workload will be easier since I will only need to serve the prima donnas up front and then sit in my jumpseat facing backwards and stare straight ahead at the wall totally oblivious to my surroundings. The life I chose. Have a good weekend down in Queertown the West Village.

Actually, that's incorrect. The Mob operated Stonewall because they knew that as an ostensibly underground bar, they could water the drinks down and overcharge for them. In fact, you couldn't even get into the Stonewall, Keller's or any of the spots in the Village during the '60s-early '80s unless the bouncer or door guy knew you, or you were with someone known to the staff.

The mobsters paid off the local Sixth Precinct cops to stay away. In fact, the cops who did the raid that started the Rebellion were from the Vice Squad and the SLA, whom the Stonewall's owners at the time did not know.

The patrons, however, weren't shaken down by the mob at all, beyond the usual price-gouging. The wiseguys were doing well with the captive market, and wanted to keep them coming back.

Yep. Thats the way it was in NYC bars & clubs, be it gay or straight. The NYPD had the "pad" wheras local precient captains would come around to all the gin mills once a week to get their envelope to look the other way as far as noise complaints, underage clientele, fights & dancing happened. Back then, you needed a caberet license to allow dancing. Many local saloons didn't have one but on a Weekend night, many patrons infused with "dancing fluid" would get up & be dancing fools & be allowed to dance the night away, as long as the local captain was happy with his envelope.
The local cops didn't care if the bar was mobbed up or not, just as long as cost of doing business was paid...and nobody got shot.
Now if you had a topless joint in your precient, that meant for fat envelopes, just in case one of the pasties fell off.

Yes, gay bars in the Village were still being occasionally raided as late as 1984. I was there when Keller's got raided a couple of times during my sophomore year. They would alleged that there were "underage people" in the club (to my memory, Keller's had a 100% ID check, just like the Monster and the other spots) and shut the place down for a few days. The owners got the message and paid up. It was illegal to serve alcohol to "known homosexuals" until 1986, and the SLA enforced that right up to the last day the law was in effect, too.

It is true that all the bars in NYC had to pay tribute to the cops. Places like Keller's and the Stonewall, being gay bars or clubs, just had to pay...more.

The SLA, along with NYPD Vice go to those locations because they are following up on a complaint. They just don't make it up out of thin air. And having fake ID does not excuse the bar from getting in trouble.

I beg to differ. Both the Vice Squad and SLA raided our places because they were "illegal", as their patrons were "illegal". They didn't need to be "responding to a complaint" at all.

The "underage" canard was just a convenient excuse that couldn't easily be disproven. Keep in mind that back then, homosexuality was closely (and falsely) conflated with pedophilia, making our clubs a very easy "target" that no one cared about.

I know for a fact that the vigorish the owner of Keller's had to cough up, was way more than the usual rate, and I also know it was because Keller's was a major gay club. The guys with broken noses had him between the devil and the deep, so he had no choice.
