Yep. As BB pointed out, they also restricted voting power to white property-owning males.

The Electoral College was a deliberate and conscious attempt to thwart the will of the people. Just because it was a great idea in 1788 doesn't make it a great idea, or a bad idea, now. We have the right to revisit the concept.

It wasn’t a great idea in 1788. Not at all. It was a compromise to get the Constitution ratified. Since the alternative (a divided America) was worse, it was something that had to be done. Some people think of the “framers” as some kind of pantheon that drafted a perfect religious document, when in reality the records of debates and revisions shows that they did not all think with one voice and that each of them made concessions for the greater good. As the column I posted references, Madison saw the merit of a popular election for president, but acknowledged that it would be a dealbreaker for the Southern states.

And why is it OK that right now one side gets to "tyrannize" the other with a minority but the other side only gets its own tyranny in the event of a supermajority? If you really cared about supposed minorities, you would want it to be balanced and not like now where only one side gets to enjoy a majority.
