Not at all. It was a compromise to get the Constitution ratified. Since the alternative (a divided America) was worse, it was something that had to be done. Some people think of the “framers” as some kind of pantheon that drafted a perfect religious document, when in reality the records of debates and revisions shows that they did not all think with one voice and that each of them made concessions for the greater good. As the column I posted references, Madison saw the merit of a popular election for president, but acknowledged that it would be a dealbreaker for the Southern states. |
