All things being equal, fat is worse than fit. I'm not talking about a few extra pounds here, morbid obesity is unfortunately very common among Pacific Islanders. |

There were probably horrible famines in the past where the only Pacific Islanders who survived were those who only needed a bare minimum of calories to survive.Unfortunately the genes that let you survive such a famine also make you incredibly susceptible to obesity and diabetes. |

The contenders are the monks of the same Brandon, the Vikings, the Polynesians who was supposed to visit Peru and Chile, and then Christopher Columbus. They are all valid theories |

It's because the plants available for food on Pacific islands is of poor caloric content. And they have only relatively recently had access to the higher calorie Western and Asian foods. |

It is fascinating, and shows evolution in action, latest research points to that gene helped samoans conquer their terratories by allowing them to endure the long trips between islands during their past which allowed to store fat and release energy over time. But in this modern era, the gene is now a negative. |

Copenhagen is warmer than Albany and about the same as New York City. There are plenty of places that are way colder than Denmark. It is far from "among the coldest."Besides, cold is easier to deal with than heat. Staying warm, by way of fire and wearing furs has been an option for hundreds of thousands of years. Air conditioning was only invented in the 20th Century. |

Albany has higher seasonal variation in temperature. Have you ever noticed the weather for Ulan Baator? Unbelievable summer to winter variation. That's what happens when you're thousands of miles from any ocean, and especially in the windward direction. |
